3's and 4's (Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays)
A typical day in the 3-4's class incorporates individual choice time when the children first arrive in the morning. This time fosters independent thinking skills, creativity, communication, and social development. Through guidance and interaction with the teachers, this time, whether spent doing puzzles, building with blocks, drawing, or sorting small toys provides significant opportunities to practice expressing feelings through appropriate words and actions and to develop problem solving skills. Children then gather for a group activity, giving them an opportunity to use listening and turn-taking skills. This time is often used for acting out a story, developing awareness of numbers, letters, sounds, and shapes and practicing foundational writing skills, such as tracing letters and shapes or using child-safe scissors. During snack time the children have an opportunity to practice good hygiene and manners. Outdoor play time allows for large muscle and social development. Back inside, the children are given the opportunity to develop their asethetic sensibility working with various colors and textures to make personalized art. This daily routine, with consistent rules and procedures, develops the children's sense of security and responsibility.
